Bio-identical hormones are an exact replica of the hormones that are naturally produced by the body. The difference between bio-identical hormones and synthetic hormones is that, although both are created in labs, synthetic hormones are not identical to the hormones naturally created in your body and bio-identical hormones match your body’s hormones molecule by molecule.

Tulsa Bioidentical hormones are manufactured in the lab to have the same molecular structure as the hormones made by your own body. By contrast, synthetic hormones are intentionally different. Drug companies can't patent a bio-identical structure, so they invent synthetic hormones that are patentable. In our practice, we have had the greatest success with an individualized approach. We begin with laboratory tests of hormone levels. If indicated, we then prescribe a precise dosage of bio-identical estrogen, testosterone or DHEA that is made up at our compounding pharmacy. Each patient is then monitored carefully through regular follow-up hormone tests to ensure we get relief at the lowest possible dosage.

Depending on what your symptoms are and which hormone(s) your body needs, Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy may choose to prescribe bio-identical hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, DHEA, melatonin or others as needed.

You are probably already using some hormones. Birth Control Pills, Hydrocortisone (used for rashes), and Vitamin D in milk are all forms of hormones.

Over the last 100 years as we have doubled our life expectancy, the soft tissue glands which create our hormones are being forced to produce them longer than ever. As well, our increasingly stressful lives, poor nutrition and lack of proper fitness results in declining levels of hormones in our bodies.

Men and women have successfully used bio-identical hormones for decades. Men suffering from the symptoms of andropause or women suffering from menopause or perimenopause, can turn to bio-identical hormones to replace the natural hormones that have declined as their bodies have aged.

In well known medical journals, researchers have reported that the bio-identical hormones, estrogen and testosterone, are not only safe but also have a positive impact on diseases like osteoporosis and prostate cancer.

Women suffering from menopause symptoms that are looking to put an end to hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping, memory loss, mood swings, weight gain, and low libido are turning to Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy to replace their natural hormones. These certified anti-aging physicians design individualized programs specifically for each woman suffering from symptoms of menopause, perimenopause, and severe PMS.

Men experiencing andropause (male menopause) who want to get a grip on weight gain, lost libido, fatigue, stress, energy, muscle mass, and body fat are also finding solutions through Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy's natural hormone therapy programs. For men, andropause happens gradually and when diagnosed, the symptoms are successfully treated using bio-identical hormone therapy.

To determine your hormonal needs, Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy's physicians thoroughly evaluate your symptoms using state-of-the-art diagnostic tests, such as, saliva, urine and/or blood tests to determine your hormone levels and your unique bio-identical hormonal needs. After starting bio-identical hormone therapy, Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy will monitor and re-evaluate your hormone levels, meeting with you, to insure that they are maintained at their optimum balance.

Saliva Hormone Tests

One of the simplest methods of hormone testing for women is the saliva hormone test. The female initial panel or profile designed by Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy includes the use of saliva to test five different hormones. Saliva tests are used to detect the levels of sex-hormones produced by the ovaries (estradiol levels-the main estrogen hormone, progesterone levels, and women testosterone levels) and adrenal glands (DHEA and cortisol levels). The saliva samples should be collected in the morning, noon, evening and night to accurately measure your cortisol levels which fluctuate throughout the day. Measuring cortisol levels provides an accurate adrenal fatigue test.

If you are still menstruating, you are asked to perform the saliva hormone test on days 19-21 of your cycle (day 1 being the beginning of menstruation) because it is at a time when the ratio of your hormones, namely estrogen levels and progesterone levels, is optimal for testing. Scientific studies show a strong correlation between hormone levels measured in saliva and the amount of hormones escaping the bloodstream and entering tissues throughout the body. For women especially, saliva tests hormone tests are comprehensive and accurate in determining key hormone levels.

Serum Hormone Tests

Some hormones circulating in the bloodstream, such as the thyroid hormones and insulin, do not enter saliva because of their large size; this means that saliva hormone tests cannot measure these hormones. As a result, the female initial panel includes a blood draw quickly performed at a lab.

These additional hormone tests for women not only provide a more comprehensive look at a woman’s hormones to be completely positive of her condition, but the tests also assist the physicians in designing a customized nutrition and fitness plan paired with your bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. The blood draw will test for a number of possible problems or conditions in a woman including anemia, the relative risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease and possible thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism).

Saliva and Blood Spot (Capillary) Combination Hormone Tests

Combining the saliva tests and blood spot tests in one, simple to use, kit provides a powerful tool for assessing the levels of a wide array of hormones that may be causing you symptoms. Hormones tested in saliva and blood spot are strongly correlated with symptoms of hormonal imbalances, both deficiency and excess. This is the key information physicians need to identify hormonal imbalances and track the efficiency of prescribed treatment, as well as adjust your dosage accordingly.

Keep in mind that saliva hormone tests are totally non-invasive and the blood spot, also referred to as a capillary test, involves a simple, nearly painless fingerstick with the tiny lancet provided in the kit. Drops of blood are collected on a filter card and allowed to dry. No special processing of the blood is required and the hormones in the dried blood are remarkably stable at room temperature for up to a month. You simply collect the saliva and blood at your convenience in your home, fill out the forms, and send the sample to the laboratory for testing in the prepaid package. Flexible, convenient, and stress free sample collection are only a few reasons to test this way.

The saliva tests in this combination kit are the same hormone tests mentioned in the above saliva testing section. Blood spot hormone testing for women is on a par with serum testing, and in addition, collection times can be optimized for fasting baseline levels and testing of hormone levels throughout the day.

Simple Tests for an Extraordinary Solution

The simple saliva tests and blood spot tests described above allow Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy physicians to get an accurate picture of your body’s current status. This information makes all the difference in designing your personalized treatment plan. These tests are the first step towards a healthier and happier you.

In general, your body’s natural hormones begin to decline after your mid-20s and hormone imbalance symptoms are frequently present by your mid-30s. Men and women often start replacing hormones between the age of 35 and 40. If you are experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, it is best not to wait.

As men age, production of the hormone testosterone begins to decline and they experience symptoms of low testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone that is responsible for maintaining mental focus, energy, metabolism, muscle mass, fat levels, and sex drive. By balancing a man’s hormones with bio-identical hormone therapy, men can restore their vitality and reduce the symptoms of andropause.

Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy Bioidentical Hormones references will also discuss the importance of good nutrition, fitness and lifestyle choices in your journey to better health with natural hormones. Eating right and exercising are equally important aspects of bio-identical hormone therapy or hormone replacement therapy (HRT). If your hormones are out of balance, your body will not respond optimally to improved nutrition and exercise. As your hormones, nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle improve – you will begin to feel like your old self with improved energy, vitality and results.

While it varies with each person, and depends on which hormone therapy you are using, you can expect to see results within three to six months. This amount of time is needed to allow for the proper balancing of your hormones.

High stress levels are very common in individuals with unbalanced hormones. Regulating hormones with bio-identical hormone therapy will certainly help to decrease stress levels and increase general feelings of well-being.

Yes. A deficiency of testosterone, estrogen, or other types of hormonal imbalance can cause a low libido.

Pellet therapy is a sustainable delivery method for bio-identical hormone therapy. Every three to six months a pellet made of bio-identical hormones is inserted just under the patient’s skin usually on the upper part of your buttocks. The pellets, which contain customized levels of estradiol or testosterone, react to the needs of the body, so they actually dissolve releasing the bio-identical hormones as needed.

If your doctor finds that your overall health and hormonal balance could be improved through vitamins and supplements, they will prescribe them to you.Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy recommends only pharmaceutical grade vitamins and supplements.

Synthetic hormones are derived from plant progesterone and animal estrogens, but are not identical to the hormones your body uses (generally an extra covalent bond or molecule is added so that it can be patented). Synthetic hormones act as toxins because their chemical makeup cannot be metabolized properly.

Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy only uses natural bio-identical hormones. Unlike synthetic hormones, bio-identical hormones or natural hormones are replicas of the body’s own natural hormones. Bio-identical hormones are made from soy, yams and other plant extracts, which are changed in a lab to be biologically identical to the same hormones your body makes.

Hormones are like stop-lights. When they are balanced the light is green and you will get the optimum results from your nutrition and fitness programs. When they are imbalanced the light is red making it, in many cases, difficult to lose and easy to gain weight.

Hormones are chemical messengers that cause the body to make changes affecting weight gain or weight loss. Changes in hormone levels are also dependant on the lifestyle we lead and can affect our mood, metabolism, and energy levels.

For example, when males become less active there is often a gradual decline in testosterone. This hormone is known to boost metabolism and has the benefit of helping lower fat levels. Thus, when testosterone is balanced a man’s ideal weight is easier to achieve.

Not necessarily, it depends on how well your body responds to bio-identical hormone therapy. Also important, it’s how well you manage your diet, sleep patterns, exercise, and stress levels that will assist you in regaining hormonal balance.

Some patients can wean off various hormones once they become balanced and have fewer symptoms of menopause or andropause. There are also patients who can wean off adrenal and thyroid support once their adrenals or thyroid glands have healed. There is no single answer for everyone, it depends on your individual hormone stability and how well your diet and lifestyle will support everything else. In the worst-case scenario, if you decided to stop bio-identical hormone therapy, your body would return to the state it was in before initiating your program.

Traditional doctors do not usually have the time or the resources to seek expertise in bio-identical hormones. Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy has undergone extensive training in bio-identical hormone therapy and have specialized knowledge of anti-aging medicine.

Yes. Bio-identical hormones are compounded prescription drugs that are produced in a specialized pharmacy. Each prescription is hand made from the highest quality ingredients and made by pharmacists that specialize in formulating drugs. Since every patient is unique, the strength or the dosage form needs to be specially made to fit the individual.

A compounding pharmacy is a specialized pharmacy that hand makes individualized bio-identical hormone prescriptions. The quality of the ingredients used, the expertise of the pharmacist and the quality of customer service are all critical decisions on what pharmacy you want to use. Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy commonly uses only a few national compounding pharmacies – ones that we have personally met with to ensure that they are the very best at what they do. After all, if the prescription is not effective (due to the pharmacy) then your results will be less than optimal.

Because bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure of the hormones made naturally by your body, there are relatively few side effects. Side effects occur mainly when the dosage of hormone is too high for the individual. Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy monitors and evaluates each patient consistently to assure balanced and proper dosing.

No, that is not true. Not all estrogens are created equal. Fears of increased risks of heart disease and breast cancer with estrogen therapy have mainly come from the WHI study that was stopped prematurely in the summer of 1992 because of an increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease that was seen in women taking Prempro. This study actually highlights the risks of estrogen therapy with non-bio-identical (synthetic) hormones, which is NOT the type used by Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy.

Hormones that are non-bio-identical use a one-size-fits-all approach to hormone therapy with hormones that are foreign to a woman’s body. We cannot generalize these study results to all estrogens. Conversely, bio-identical hormones, which are the same as what is in your body naturally, have been proven to be safe. Prescriptions Compounding & Pharmacy uses bio-identical hormones and the two main estrogens that we replace are E2 – Estradiol and E3 – Estriol.

As far as heart disease, bio-identical hormone therapy has never been shown to increase the risk of heart disease and as a matter of fact, hormone replacement with bio-identical hormones has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease.

In summary, we cannot use results of studies done on synthetic, non-bio-identical hormones to assess risks of bio-identical hormones. When an educated provider prescribes bio-identical hormones in the proper manner, there are no increased risks of the occurrence of breast cancer or heart disease.

The ingredients in bioidentical hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are approved by the FDA. However, state and local pharmacy boards have jurisdiction over them, not the FDA. It is important to know you are using the highest quality compounding pharmacy and that they follow the most stringent guidelines and have excellent quality assurance.

Generally no. Some medicines may actually be reduced or no longer needed.
